Five things climbing Kilimanjaro taught me about being an entrepreneur

Image
This is a fantastic article that I though was worth sharing.  I couldn't have said these things better myself.  in Sha When I told people I planned to climb Kilimanjaro, their reactions were similar to when I started a business – a mix of indifference, awe, envy, and subtle questioning of my sanity. I know that many serious climbers don’t consider Kilimanjaro a real climb, but for me reaching 19,340 ft. was an eye-opening experience and proof that I could push my limits. While I was preparing for the climb, the parallels between mountaineering and founding a company became very interesting. While I am not sure if being an entrepreneur made me a better climber, or vice versa, there is tremendous overlap between the personalities of people who want to be entrepreneurs and people who want to climb Kilimanjaro. What separates those who dream of success and those who actually succeed? It really comes down to how...

Murder on Kilimanjaro - New Review

Image
I'm thrilled to share this new review from one of my favorite reviewers The Midwest Book Review.  Thank you very much to editor-in-chief James A. Cox for a wonderful review! “The country can wait when family is on the line.   “Murder on Kilimanjaro” is an entry into Charles G. Irion & Ronald J. Watkins’ Summit Murder Mystery series.   Scott Devlon is hired to be the president’s guide as he looks for his lost son on the top of Africa’s tallest mountain, Kilimanjaro.   Finding that this guidance job goes beyond being bizarre because it’s for an American president, there may be more that hangs in the balance than a son, a president, or his country.   “Murder on Kilimanjaro” is well worth considering for lovers of mystery and suspense.”   – The Midwest Book Review If you would like to read and review any of the books in my Summit Murder Mystery series or Hell Series, please contact my publicist Jennifer Howell at jennifer@irionbooks.com! ...

200 paragliders to fly off Mt. Kilimanjaro for charity

Image
200 paragliders to fly off Mt. Kilimanjaro and fundraise $1M for East Africa charities Some events only happen once in a lifetime. While we’ve seen hundreds if not thousands Kilimanjaro charity climbs, we’ve certainly never seen 200 paragliders jump from the peak of Africa’s 19,341 foot summit in the name of charity. It will be a world-record breaking event. Three years of preparation will culminate in the largest Kilimajaro fundraising event of its kind with the 200 paragliders and support team set to start their climb up Mt Kilimanjaro on January 27 th , 2013. The project is appropriately dubbed ‘Wings of Kilimanjaro’. Paragliding pilots and passengers from around the world will aim to reach the summit and then jump off the mountain paragliding down. Normally, this type of activity is banned by the Tanzanian Government – but determination has made it possible and the team received a one-time special permission. ...

Breakfast with Senators

Image
I was very honored and excited to attend a breakfast wherein I was able to meet retired Senator Jon Kyl and the newly elected Senator Jeff Flake!  While I was in Washington D.C. last month, I stopped by Senator Jon Kyl's office and dropped off a copy of Murder on Kilimanjaro .  When I saw him at the breakfast I attended, he told me he read Murder on Kilimanjaro and loved it!  How cool!  I gave a copy of Senator Jeff Flake at the breakfast and he said he is very excited to read the book because he lived in Africa for three years!  What great endorsements! Synopsis of Murder on Kilimanjaro - In Murder on Kilimanjaro, Scott Devlon, Afghanistan war veteran, mountaineer and occasional agent for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency has been invited by the sitting President of the United States to join him on his climb of the highest point in Africa. The president is returning to his family roots and will be accompanied by his recently surfaced son, product ...

Kilimanjaro, which makes them the oldest couple to ever accomplish the feat. Even though the Kafers have a huge passion for mountain climbing, this adventure was bigger. According to AlzheimerBC.org, the couple was participating in a fundraising initiative. The British Columbia couple raised $24,000 for the cause. “Esther and Martin’s achievement epitomizes the spirit of the Ascent for Alzheimer’s event, which is that no matter how challenging the journey there is support.” Says CEO of Alzheimer Society of B.C., Jean Blake. The couple met on a mountain top and event spent their honeymoon on top of the Matterhorn. The couple moved to Canada because of their surroundings. In a The Globe and Mail article, Martin ...

Murder on Kilimanjaro Review

Image
In my inbox today I received a great five star review of Murder on Kilimanjaro!  Take a look... As I was reading this book I was saddened knowing that this was the final climb of the Summit Murder Mystery series. On the upside there are three more books I have not read yet. This storyline was so realistic, the incidents on the climb could really have been pulled out of the newspapers. Once again we go along with Scott Devlon, Tom and Natasha, Dr.Calvin, Tarja and Quentin Stern. The President of the United States is also along for this ride. This story has all the twists and turns of a true mystery, it keeps you guessing until the the very end. From descriptions of the locale, Tanzania would be a wonderful place to visit. Even if you have not read any of the Summit Murder Mysteries, you must at least read this one as it will pull you in to read the other ones. Although a series, they can all stand alone. Much applause and thanks to our two fine authors, Charles...

Seniors to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro for Alzheimer's

Image
A pair of Vancouver seniors won’t let advanced age, aching bones or the threat of altitude sickness stop them from attempting a record-setting climb up Africa’s tallest mountain. Martin and Esther Kafer — 85 and 84-years-old respectively — begin their ascent up Mount Kilimanjaro on Sept. 24 in a bid to raise money and awareness for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. The Kafers will break the Guinness world record for oldest man and woman to conquer the peak if they complete their journey Sept. 30. The Vancouver couple, who have climbed more than 500 mountains since they began hiking together 62 years ago, were on Grouse Mountain Thursday challenging British Columbians to march up the Grind in support of the cause. Martin and Esther have raised $20,000 for Alzheimer’s research and urged locals to create teams of seven to climb the famous North Vancouver hiking trail the same day they’re set to conquer Kili...

Murder on Kilimanjaro Excerpt

Image
I know a lot of you are getting very excited for the release of Murder on Kilimanjaro!  It will be here in the next couple weeks!!  I can't wait for you all to read it.  While you are waiting, I thought I would give you this sneak peek!  Enjoy! The president was ahead in a slight cluster, the Secret Service agents forming a wall around him.   A few of those most trusted were admitted to congratulate them and have their photographs taken. In fact, cameras broke out everywhere.   Guides joined me to have their pictures taken, as did others.   Tired as we were, exhausted as were many of us, we’d made it and for a few minutes we savored the joy of accomplishment.   Camera flashes formed round, silent bursts of light. The snowfall was very heavy, whipping down on us in a violent wind.   I turned to find Diana, to savor this moment with her when I heard the sounds of rapid gunfire coming from the president’s group.   It was an...

Gilbert Woman to Hike Kilimanjaro to Raise Money for Charity

Image
Great article in the Arizona Republic today about Laura Barnes and her upcoming Kilimanjaro climb. In Swahili, hakuna matata translates to "no worries." Laura Barnes of Gilbert uses these words immortalized by the Disney movie "The Lion King" to assuage the fears of her 11-year-old son Henry about her upcoming charity trek of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the African country of Tanzania. "Kilimanjaro? Hakuna matata," Barnes says jauntily to Henry, who's troubled that the name of the mountain starts with the consonant "kil."  Hakuna matata was far from what Barnes' parents felt 40 years ago when their daughter was diagnosed with a hole in her heart. Barnes was 4 then and living in the village of Hartford in northwest England. "I cannot even begin to imagine the fear and the terror they were going through," she said. "But they didn't show it to me." When she turned 10, Barnes had open-heart surgery at Ro...
