Teenagers Conquer Mount Kilimanjaro for a Good Cause

Moshi — IRENE Joachim (14) and her young brother Geoffrey Yohana (12) beat all odds and reached the snowcap of Mount Kilimanjaro helping to raise funds for HIV/AIDS orphans. As Irene recalls, around 7.30 a.m. on July 2, after a breathtaking two and half hour walk from Stellar Point on Mount Kilimanjaro she reached Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres, above sea level. "For a few seconds I totally forgot that I had come along with my young brother, after 15 minutes or so I then saw him coming towards me with the second group and it dawned on me he had also made it. While we’ve seen hundreds if not thousands Kilimanjaro charity climbs, we’ve certainly never seen 200 paragliders jump from the peak of Africa’s 19,341 foot summit in the name of charity. It will be a world-record breaking event. Three years of preparation will culminate in the largest Kilimajaro fundraising event of its kind with the 200 paragliders and support team set to start their climb up Mt Kilimanjaro on January 27 th , 2013. Couple becomes oldest to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro Swiss natives Esther, 84, and Martin Kafer, 85, have just successfully reached the top of Africa’s tallest summit, Mt. Kilimanjaro, which makes them the oldest couple to ever accomplish the feat. Even though the Kafers have a huge passion for mountain climbing, this adventure was bigger. According to AlzheimerBC.org, the couple was participating in a fundraising initiative. The British Columbia couple raised $24,000 for the cause. “Esther and Martin’s achievement epitomizes the spirit of the Ascent for Alzheimer’s event, which is that no matter how challenging the journey there is support.” Says CEO of Alzheimer Society of B.C., Jean Blake.
